On September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, Narendra Modi put forth his suggestion for the occasion of a ‘Yoga Day’. The draft resolution proposed by India was then endorsed by a record 177 member states! ?
?And from that, International Yoga Day was born, celebrated every year since on June 21st. ?
?Due to the Coronavirus, the theme for this years International Yoga Day is ‘Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family’. ?
?Yoga plays a significant role during the world crisis of Covid-19 as yoga boosts our immunity and is known to cure respiratory disorders. Pranayama or breathing exercises increase our oxygen intake by up to five times! ?
?Through this rich oxygenation of blood to the brain, heart, lungs, and digestive systems; our organs functioning is vastly improved thus also improving our overall health. As a healing and other alternative form of therapy, yoga also helps to relieve stress and keeps the mind calm.?
?So, if not yet a master at yoga, (like me), perhaps use this day to focus on the all round benefits of yoga and test the water ??. Why not join a live or recorded online yoga class? Some moves will be easy, some challenging, some impossible; their names might not mean anything to you and it might end up being more a game of Twister than yoga, but it’s a start, and the breathing exercises alone are the most relaxing experience ever! ???
