Did you know that the very first International Women’s Day was celebrated 102 years ago by revolutionaries in Russia? You can read more about the meaning and history of International Women's Day here. It is truly fascinating.
When I think about International Women's Day, I think about the women who greatly affect my life. Growing up with humble beginnings, the first person who always comes to mind is my mom. She is the strongest person I know. When I turned 10, she became a single parent. I watched her raise two very young children on her own, go back to night school and land the job she needed to support her family. She is the light that continues to inspire me, the reason I became a teacher and is truly the epitome of strength.
As a young girl, I saw and understood the meaning and value of hard work. I began working in our local mall at the age of 12. By high school, I was influenced by some of the most talented teachers. Sophomore year, I was placed in honor's level English class with a teacher known throughout the town. She was the tough teacher; the one who made students work harder than they ever worked before. She pushed me to go beyond the lines, over the lines and then come back around again with conclusions, data and detailed support for my reasoning. She inspired me to write, to think and to problem-solve. Her passion for education grew in my heart. During my first year teaching fourth grade, there was a knock at my classroom door. We were celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss. I quietly opened the door, and to my surprise, there she stood with a stack of books in her hands. She read Dr. Seuss to my students, made them laugh, gave me a proud hug and walked out with a wink.
In college, during my master's program, I was again greatly influenced by another woman, my former professor. I met her during my last course before graduation. The course was a seminar and held high expectations. As I had just become a mom, I was nervous about balancing my life. However, I seamlessly flowed through all of it. I loved her class; it was lively, engaging and filled with humor. This professor taught me about the importance of self-reflection and taking time for myself. Most importantly, she taught me to let go of fear and to take risks. She showed me how to become a better teacher, how to empathize with my students and to see things through different perspectives. After I graduated, I received a very exciting phone call from her and the education department. They asked me to come and work with her at the university. And I did.
Most of all, I am inspired by my daughter. I am filled with wonder and amazement as I watch her grow in the world. I can already see how she contributes to the world at her young age. Her simple smile brings life and laughter to everyday situations. Her voice lights up the room for everyone as she sings. She contributes every day-unaware of how she affects the lives in her inner and outer circles.
For all working women, whether you work inside or outside of the home, your time is now. Our time is now. Let us continue to be the amazing role models for our young girls every day, as they deserve nothing less.
I would love to hear about the women who impact you, changed you or made you a better person. Who impacts or inspires your life?

9 年Beginning with my Mom I have been blessed to have several strong women in my life. My Aunts were great examples of speaking up & getting involved in our community. Several cousins have continued to be role models & sources of inspiration. I have been truly blessed "...among women"!
