Their research suggests that organizations that introduced self-managed teams saw the share of management jobs held by women increase by 6%.
Sometimes called a Project Task Force, A Cross-Functional team or a Scrum team, these teams are most commonly used for innovation, to solve big multi-stakeholder problems, to build new products or produce innovations in service experiences.

Teams are delegated the authority to solve problems and make decisions on their own. Self-managed teams leverage the expertise and lived experiences of all team members to plan and coordinate work. The culture created? by small self-managed teams encourages ideation and accountability, in effect it causes these teams to gel together forming a new in-group. Management science has through many years of publications shown that self-managed teams outperform traditional management hierarchies, especially in the digital economy.
According to their new book Getting to Diversity
“Teams can promote diversity by allowing people from lower ranks of the company to show their technical chops or management potential to people at higher levels, in their own unit or outside their regular orbit. If you learned to code in high school but ended up in accounting, now is your chance to show what you can do, which may lead to a job offer in product development, where promotion opportunities abound.”
Through this new in-group or peers, teammates may hear about new opportunities, gain references, and mentorship, and receive opportunities for new and specialized training. In a nutshell, these self-managed teams provide a participant with more opportunities for growth and advancement by virtue of working with new people in pursuit of a common goal.
