International Women's Day Interview with Juawana Allen
International Women’s Day is all about gender diversity. It has a dual purpose: it’s a day to celebrate women across the globe as well as a call to recognize women as equals. International Women’s Day aims to push us towards a gender equal world free of bias, stereotypes, and discriminations. This is something that we all achieve together.
The IWD 2023 theme #EmbraceEquity, seeks to get the world talking about why "equal opportunities are no longer enough" - and can in fact be exclusionary, rather than inclusive.
To celebrate IWD we are showcasing some of our inspirational female Aon colleagues from across the globe.
Today we hear from Juawana Allen, Account Representative based in the United States.
What does ‘Embracing Equity’ mean to you?
Embracing equity means a fair change for everyone. Where every person feels as though their ideas are respected, they are supported regardless of their needs, it also means that people are able to bring their authentic selves to work. When you embrace equity there are healthier organization. It means companies lead with a sense of belonging.
Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
Unfortunately, women fall into the category of marginalized groups and for decades, we have been living in the shadows with a lack of recognition, awareness or gratitude.
Women should be celebrated loudly! International Women’s Day represents an opportunity for the world to raise a standing ovation for all the cool things females have accomplished over the years.
International Women’s Day give us an opportunity to thank all the women that came before us. A celebratory thank you for being a part of the change, for breaking the barriers for generations to come, to allow them to know their work hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?
I have overcome the challenges I have faced by learning to not take everything personally. Every encounter, no matter how challenging, is a learning experience. I believe that there is always room to correct a misunderstanding, despite how difficult you think it may be. You will be supported by others who speak up and advocate as allies.
What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?
Your 20’s are for learning.
In your twenties, you’re just starting to figure out what you want to do. It’s taken me some time to realize that no one really knows what they want to in their twenties so I shouldn’t feel pressured to fall into a mold or make a knee jerk reaction to a life decision.
If you’re always driven by what you think you should do, what people tell you to do, or baggage that you may have carried over the years. Take a moment to stop and drop the expectation of other or you just might just miss the lesson.
Why do you think diversity in the workplace is so important?
Diversity is the key to success and longevity in a company. Having a company that doesn’t just market Diversity Equity and Inclusion but models a culture of inclusion and belonging is what keep employees happy.
When you see diversity and inclusion commitment from leadership and feel the change filtering down through every level of the organization there is increased confidence in the future.
Diversity in the workplace allows new opportunities to tap into a multitude of talents, gifts, backgrounds, viewpoints and experiences. Diversity creates a united front.
