International Women's Day

International Women's Day

Abundant Gratitude to Mei Sim Lai who organised the panel discussion and for her invitation to contribute to a panel discussion on Inspire Inclusion. Audience were invited to submit questions for panel discussion. Informing the discussion were questions from #Cllr Ketan Sheth of Brent Council, #Navin Sivaganam, #Dr Selin Calik, #Hilary Briggs.

  • With so much inequality around us, how do we inspire inclusion and gender equality?
  • In today's climate, DEI has taken a huge step back, especially in big enterprise.... What do you think should be done differently to ensure women do not impacted? Some argue that DEI initiatives in the past result (sic) in quota hire, adding to this reversal.
  • How do we ensure that we do not incite a backlash from boys (men) being left behind?
  • ....... I found a London based women empowerment NGO on energy, what do you think British Society should do to encourage more women inclusion in the energy sector?
  • Panel Members: David Stringer-Lamarre , Bianca Yau ACSI CeMAP Sabila Din Nzube U. Dame Neslyn Watson-Druée, DBE Christine Ennew Moderator Mei Sim Lai OBE DL

Diverse views were shared the moral case for inclusion, the importance of valuing diversity, promoting equality, and upholding the rights and dignity of all individuals.

The economic case for inclusion Broader talent pool: By having a diverse workforce. Live examples given. Improved decision-making and better outcomes. Enhanced employee engagement and retention: higher levels of employee engagement and lower turnover rates. Better customer understanding: service provision and employment being two sides of the same coin. Reputation and brand enhancement: Lively contributions from the audience.

The role of primary education was mentioned several times.

Other broad area discussed The Female Credit Gap, The business case for why gender matters. Cultivating the female wealth market - mobilising female wealth to support women entrepreneurs. Equality and justice: Inclusion is essential for creating a more just and equitable society, providing equal opportunities, access to resources, and protections for all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other characteristics. Fostering of empathy, understanding and social cohesion, social harmony, cooperation, and a sense of shared purpose. Creating a more just and inclusive world. Jeanne Mpondo, ACSI, DipPFS pointed out to me that the voice of the rural woman was missing. International Women's Day need to facilitate the voice of every woman.

Dame Neslyn Watson-Druée, DBE what a poignant and insightful read. Thank you so much. I particularly would love everyone to engage with one of the leading questions raised in your article which is “In today's climate, DEI has taken a huge step back, especially in big enterprise.... What do you think should be done differently to ensure women are not impacted?”. … and to broaden this question by not seemingly limiting it to just women recognising the mutually intersectional parts that mostly attends this diverse group but bringing the broader DE&I protected characteristics group into the frame. In my view, society and the social and progressive equalising dynamics that was deliberately created to minimise the effects of discriminatory practices in whatever guise is grossly undermined by the retrogressive decline of the focus on DE&I

A celebration of all women indeed. Thanks again for putting the spotlight on the ones with as much passion and drive, small or big dreams, with huge hearts and humble contributions. Our granmothers, mothers, sisters.

In the current climate it is especially important to highlight the benefits to society, business and education from DEI initiatives. As we raise the tide we lift all boats.
