International Women’s Day 2025

Breaking Barriers and Accelerating Action: Women Driving Progress at West?

As the maritime industry continues to evolve, so does the role of women within it. Once considered a traditionally male-dominated space, shipping and shipping insurance are increasingly seeing the influence and leadership of women who are breaking barriers, shaping policy, and mentoring the next generation. At West, this change is not just observed—it is actively driven.?

To mark International Women’s Day 2025 and its theme, “Accelerate Action”, we are highlighting the remarkable women at West who are leading the charge toward gender equity, reinforcing the business case for diversity, and shaping the future of women in the maritime industry. Through their personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs, they illustrate how West is championing an inclusive and progressive marine insurance industry.?

Women driving progress??

The women at West exemplify resilience, expertise, and leadership in an industry where female representation in senior roles is still growing. Many have built extensive careers in marine insurance, breaking stereotypes and mentoring future leaders along the way.?

Windy Zheng , Business Development Manager, has dedicated over two decades to marine insurance, beginning her journey at 上海海事大学 before moving into brokering and risk management. “Over my career, I’ve learned that success in this industry is about more than just expertise—it’s about building strong relationships and continuously adapting to change,” she explains. “The maritime sector is evolving, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to collaborate with professionals across the industry, exchanging knowledge and shaping the future of risk management.”??

Her commitment to mentorship and professional development extends beyond West. Between 2005 to 2024, Windy was the Chief Representative of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) in China, where demonstrated her commitment towards education and ethical standards for emerging professionals.?

Similarly, Elizabeth Wood , Deputy Head of Claims (Hellas), has spent over 35 years in the Greek shipping market, progressing through diverse roles in chartering operations, legal, and claims management before joining West in 2014. Reflecting on her journey, she highlights the importance of confidence and resilience, stating, “The best way to navigate industry prejudices is to not feel intimidated, speak up, and demonstrate your capabilities through action.”?

For Emily McCulloch , Head of Claims (Americas), a love for the sea and a passion for law led her to specialise in marine insurance. “Marine insurance is the most interesting facet of the industry, as no two cases are the same,” she says. “Since joining West, I have been supported in my own professional development and have had the opportunity to help build business relationships across the Americas.”?

Breaking barriers?

For many women in marine insurance, breaking into the industry meant challenging long-held perceptions. For Emily McCulloch, entering the field meant navigating the “old boys’ club” reputation of the broader shipping industry. “At times, I felt overlooked or as though I had to work harder to prove myself compared to my male counterparts. Rather than be deterred, I learned to be assertive, advocate for myself, and focus on my abilities and expertise.”??

Nicola Cox , Head of Defence Claims, recalls how workplace culture has evolved since she entered the workplace in the 1990s. "Leadership today is about fostering an environment where team members feel encouraged to contribute. The more inclusive the space, the stronger the decision-making and innovation within an organisation."?

Flexible working to support career progression?

One key factor in accelerating progress for women in maritime has been greater flexibility in working arrangements.??

Balancing motherhood with a demanding career adds another layer of complexity. Nicola Cox recalls the challenges she and other women faced in juggling family life with career progression but notes that flexible working patterns and remote working have allowed women to achieve their goals while contributing to gender equality.??

Emily McCulloch highlights the importance of West’s commitment to flexibility. “West provides support, flexibility, and empathy to all staff, allowing a tenable work-life balance.” She adds, “It’s encouraging to see how the industry is evolving, but there’s still work to be done.”?

The power of mentorship?

One of the most effective ways to accelerate progress is through mentorship and sponsorship—something many women at West have benefited from and now actively champion.??

Windy Zheng highlights how guidance from seasoned professionals shaped her career. "Early in my career, I was taught that ‘every interaction is a classroom.’ Staying curious and open to learning from those around me has been invaluable. Now, I’m considering collaborations with organisations like ICS and WISTA to offer mentorship opportunities for women in the maritime sector."?

While mentorship helps women gain skills and guidance, sponsorship is equally crucial—where senior leaders actively advocate for women’s career progression by connecting them to key projects and leadership opportunities. “Sponsorship ensures that talented women don’t just receive advice, but also have doors opened for them at crucial career junctures,” says Emily McCulloch.??

The business case for diversity?

Diversity in marine insurance is not just about representation—it directly enhances business performance.??

Rupa Winch- ACIPD, Global Head of Human Resources, emphasises the value of diverse perspectives. “I’ve found that having a voice isn’t just importantit’s necessary. This is an industry where expertise, determination, and authenticity are valued, and I’m grateful to be surrounded by leaders who appreciate what I bring to the table. Already, I’ve seen the incredible support from our CEO and Board who recognise the importance of diverse perspectives and backgrounds to create a stronger, more inclusive Club.”?

Leadership at West has evolved significantly, with women taking on more prominent roles at the executive level, including the shipowners’ Board. “Board meetings have become more dynamic, challenging and enjoyable as a result,” notes Nicola Cox.??

This shift highlights how having diverse voices at the table strengthens decision-making and ensures a broader range of perspectives are considered. Windy Zheng echoes this sentiment, explaining how diverse teams drive better risk management. “I’ve seen a significant shift in women’s representation and influence in marine insurance. More women are stepping into leadership roles and driving innovation in areas like digital transformation and loss prevention. While challenges remain, their growing presence strengthens decision-making and client engagement. Diversity fosters collaboration, creativity, and better problem-solvingleading to more effective solutions for Members and partners. It’s not just about fairness; it’s about delivering the best possible service."?

What’s next for women in marine insurance??

The future of the industry is rapidly evolving, with digital transformation, sustainability, and regulatory shifts reshaping the market. For women, these changes present new opportunities.??

Elizabeth Wood sees growing potential in leadership roles. "More women are taking on senior positions, but we need to accelerate this trend. Leadership programmes and sponsorship initiatives will be key to ensuring continued progress."?

To further accelerate action, Windy Zheng believes the industry should prioritise data-driven strategies, such as publishing diversity metrics and benchmarking against global standards like the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles. “By making diversity data transparent, we can hold the industry accountable and ensure continued progress.”?

At West, we recognise that fostering an inclusive environment requires continuous effort. From flexible working policies to leadership development initiatives, we are committed to ensuring that women at West have the tools and opportunities to thrive.?

Accelerating action together?

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the contributions of the women who are shaping West and the wider marine insurance sector. Their resilience, leadership, and expertise are driving meaningful change, but there is still work to be done. As an industry, we must continue to push forward—advocating for equal opportunities, addressing barriers, and ensuring that progress happens at pace.?
