In celebration of International Women's Day 2024, we're sharing the inspiring story of Charlotte Smith, one of our Service Centre Managers in the Traffic Management team. Her journey is a testament to her resilience and the strength in overcoming obstacles in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
What initially drew you to a career in traffic management?
“After successfully completing my apprenticeship in business administration, I found myself looking for a new opportunity where I could challenge myself. While I had gained valuable skills and knowledge through my apprenticeship, I couldn't help but feel that there was something more out there for me to explore.
That's when I came across the opportunity to become a Traffic Management Rental Manager at Sunbelt Rentals. Despite having no prior experience in this field, I was determined to push myself out of my comfort zone and take on this new role. With my NVQ certification in hand, I applied for the position, and I was offered the job. It was a leap of faith, but one that I am grateful for to this day.
The past 16 years have been a whirlwind of learning, growth, and success at Sunbelt Rentals, and I have never once regretted my decision to take on the role in Traffic Management. For the past 6 years, I have been proudly leading the Traffic Management depot in Stockton, utilising my skills and expertise to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to have stepped out of my comfort zone and pursued a career that I am truly passionate about. “

What advice would you offer to other women considering a career in traffic management?
“I would say 100% go for it – it’s a fast paced and exciting work environment. You can really thrive here, it doesn’t matter what gender you are, we’re all a family here to support each other!”
What are some of the biggest challenges and rewards you've encountered in this field?
“Being a woman in a male-dominated field can be a daunting experience, especially when faced with initial scepticism and resistance due to gender and age. However, I refused to let these barriers hold me back or stop me from pursuing my passion in this field. Instead, I used them as an opportunity and motivation to prove myself and excel in my role to show that gender and age should not define my success.
With determination, I have shown that I am a confident, capable, and driven career woman in the industry. One of my biggest achievements I’ve encountered while in my role has been training a vast number of fellow female colleagues in their roles as rental managers and seeing their growth and success in the field.”
In your view, how can we further empower and support women in this industry?
“Over the years I’ve witnessed a huge shift in the people employed. It’s gone from a very male dominated industry to one that’s inclusive of all genders. We now have a number of female Rental Managers, Managers and TMO’s which is awesome! “
