International Women's Day 2023: Celebrating Women in the Energy Industry

Today on International Women’s Day we identify there is still work to do for worldwide equality in the workplace, where people can not only feel comfortable to be themselves but also feel enabled to do so.??

To celebrate women in business this International Women’s Day, we interviewed Cheryl Jordan , our Business Manager, who has enjoyed a long and successful career in the utilities sector.?

Tell us about your career journey within the energy sector. ?

?My career in the energy sector started 25 years ago at British Gas where I had the opportunity to work in a variety of departments; from Prepayment, Meter Management, Data Flow Management, Settlements to Software Implementation. Continuing to work within the energy industry, I decided to move to Engage Consulting where I provided consultancy services to energy suppliers helping to make improvements to their processes. ?

After a short stint in the aviation industry, I re-entered energy where I worked as an Account Manager executing trades on UK and Nordic portfolios for Gas and Power contracts. I moved on to work as a Professional Services Advisor at ESG Global supporting new entrants through the Market Entry process for both gas and power. From there, wishing to gain further knowledge of the utilities sector, I moved to Echo Managed Services, a water company where I supported water suppliers with an existing billing application as well as implementing new software developments. ?

Today I enjoy working as a Business Manager at Phidex, an ESG Company , an innovative and thriving company. Wearing many hats, I oversee business development and marketing for the company. The variety of my role enables me to relish many interesting opportunities including meeting new people and familiar faces I have met over the years through my many roles working within the energy industry! ?

My long-standing career within the industry has been highly fulfilling as I have enjoyed the opportunity to work within a variety of roles across the sector and will continue to relish the opportunities this exciting industry brings. ?

Since the beginning of my career within the energy industry, specifically within the organisations I have worked, there has always been a constant abundance of female top-level management which is inspiring to see, and I hope this continues.

As an industry, we should continue to work with organisations such as WUN - Womens Utilities Network , to promote women, and support their career progression from graduate to board-level positions.?

What has been a highlight of your career so far? ?

During my working life I have been given several exciting opportunities to work, and in some cases live in a number of international locations. My favourite would have to be India and Hungary. ?

What motivates you as a woman? ?

The desire to be better and make a positive impact. People often have limiting beliefs that they can’t achieve what it is they truly desire. With focus and determination, you can achieve whatever it is you want. ?

How do you maintain a work-life balance? ?

Believe it or not, I have an allotment which I find a very therapeutic space. I also love my holidays and weekends away. I also meditate often?as it?really helps ground me. ?

What is your favourite holiday destination? ?

There are so many to choose from. I would have to say South Africa; having previously gone on Safari in India, South Africa tops that. ?
