Russian attacks leave two Ukrainian hydroelectric power plants inoperable says Ukrhydroenergo

Ukraine's critical infrastructure suffered a severe blow yesterday as two hydroelectric power plants were rendered inoperable during a morning shelling. The Press service of Ukrhydroenergo confirmed the extensive damage inflicted on the hydroelectric facilities, attributing the destruction to targeted strikes amidst Russia's ongoing assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Diamer Basha dam construction progressing

WAPDA has shared some great pictures of construction progressing at the 4500MW Diamer Basha dam project on the Indus River in Pakistan.Scheduled for completion in 2028, the multipurpose dam project will store 8.1 MAF water to irrigate 1.2 million acres of land, and will have an annual energy output of 18,097GWh. It will consist of a 272m high dam and two underground power stations, one on each side of the river.

However, this growth highlights a glaring gap, with only 10% of the continent's potential being realized, according to the upcoming World Hydropower Outlook set to be unveiled on June 12, 2024.

Spotlight on: Merowe Dam, Sudan

The Merowe Dam is a 1250MW project located on the river Nile in northern Sudan and is the country’s largest hydropower project. Construction of the project began in 2003 and was inaugurated in 2009. It is designed to provide electricity, irrigation, flood protection and sediment management. The Merowe Dam stretches approximately 9km in length, with a crest height reaching up to 67m. Positioned on each riverbank, it features concrete-faced rock fill dams, forming a reservoir spanning 8.3km3, equivalent to about 20% of the Nile's yearly flow. The reservoir lake, elevated 300m above sea level, extends across 174km.
