£3 billion lawsuit filed in Netherlands against Vale SA and Samarco’s Dutch subsidiary over Mariana Dam failure

A £3 billion lawsuit has been filed in the Netherlands against mining firm Vale SA and Samarco Iron Ore Europe BV, the Dutch subsidiary of Samarco, stemming from the catastrophic collapse of the Mariana tailings dam. The legal action, spearheaded by Pogust Goodhead and Lemstra Van der Korst, represents a coalition of claimants including seven Brazilian municipalities from Bahia, Espirito Santo, and Minas Gerais, close to 1000 businesses and associations, and over 77,000 individuals. The lawsuit aims to seek redress for the damages incurred due to the dam failure, with the funds sought anticipated to be utilized for essential public policies in areas such as education, health, and the environment.

Rye Development awarded $81 million by DOE for Lewis Ridge pumped storage project

Rye Development has announced it has been chosen by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to receive $81 million in funding for the Lewis Ridge Pumped Storage Project. This selection comes as part of the DOE’s Clean Energy Demonstration Program on Current and Former Mine Land (CEML), funded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Lewis Ridge Project, slated to become one of the first pumped storage hydropower facilities constructed in the US in over three decades, is set to make history as the first such facility to be built on former mine land.

The Dnipro hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, fell victim to a missile attack last week, marking another blow to the nation's energy infrastructure. Zambia and Zimbabwe to retender $5 billion Batoka Gorge hydropower project

Zambia and Zimbabwe are set to retender the Batoka Gorge hydropower project, Bloomberg reported. The project has been valued at $5 billion and will have a capacity of 2.4GW.
