International Union of Painters and Allied Trades: Pioneering Excellence in Glazing Apprenticeship Training.

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) has long been a leader in Glazing apprenticeship programs and continuous education for skilled journeypersons. Among its advanced training centers, IUPAT District Council 21 exemplifies the union’s unique approach to apprenticeship programs, accreditation, certification, and adaptability, ensuring it meets the industry’s ever-changing demands within the glazing industry.?

Within the cutting-edge facilities of IUPAT DC21, apprentices and journeypersons experience a secure and distinctive learning environment. The IUPAT Glazing Apprentices engage in hands-on learning with a three-story steel structure and an air and water pressure chamber at the training center. Moreover, specialized training facilities cater to the Architectural Glass and Metal Technician Program (AGMT), allowing journeypersons to elevate their skills through AGMT mock-ups and adherence to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. These proactive training efforts have yielded significant success, with around 50 glaziers achieving AGMT certifications in 2023. Notably, 97 dedicated DC21 members renewed their certifications this past summer, showcasing DC21’s commitment to continuous learning and professional growth. This achievement not only underscores the dedication of IUPAT members to their crafts but also highlights the association’s unwavering support for journeypersons’ career development and collaboration with signatory contractors, providing expanded opportunities for glaziers on diverse projects across the United States.?

The robust partnership between glazing contractors and IUPAT DC21 has allowed them to hold innovative classes and training programs in their centers. More so, starting this year and continuing into 2024, DC21 training centers are launching ‘Estimating’ and ‘Basics of Project Management’ classes, which have come from discussions with contractors and DC21. These classes will give our members the skills needed on job sites and an opening to further their career opportunities. These initiatives underscore that IUPAT apprentices and members are the preferred choice for contractors. They are meticulously prepared from day one, installing confidence in contractors who recognize IUPAT Glaziers and members as highly skilled workers ready to tackle on-site challenges.?
