Worldwide medical imaging specialists will commemorate the 12th International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2023) on November 8. In order to acknowledge and promote the crucial role that radiology plays in the patient journey, we cordially invite all radiologists, radiographers, radiological technicians, experts in other relevant professions, and patient groups to get together on this day.
On November 8, the world will celebrate the International Day of Radiology, a day dedicated to raising public awareness of the critical role radiologists and radiographers play in the healthcare continuum and the value that radiology brings to safe patient care and the revolutionary effects of radiology on medicine on this day, including early detection, fewer procedures, and dramatically improved treatment outcomes. It's a chance for us as radiologists to consider these advantages and to share them with our peers in the medical field and the general public.
Every year, the International Day of Radiology (IDoR) is held to raise awareness of the importance of medical imaging in contemporary healthcare. Every year on November 8, it is commemorated as the anniversary of the discovery of x-rays. As a collaborative effort by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the European Society of Radiology (ESR), and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), it was first presented in 2012. Over 200 national, sub-specialty, and associated associations worldwide recognise and commemorate the International Day of Radiology. Since 1996, the "Radiographers Association of Madhya Pradesh (India)" has observed this day. Mr. Shivakant Vajpai, Secretary of the Madhya Pradesh Radiographers Association, who also holds the positions of Senior Radiographer and Radiation Safety Officer in the Madhya Pradesh government, suggested the theme for the day.
The European Day of Radiology was established in 2011 and is now replaced by the International Day of Radiology. The European Society of Radiology (ESR) hosted the inaugural and only European Day of Radiology (EDoR) on February 10, 2011, to mark the anniversary of R?ntgen's passing. The International Day of Radiology was established by the ESR in collaboration with the RSNA and the ACR as a result of the EDoR's success. Additionally, it was agreed that the celebration's date should be changed from R?ntgen's death anniversary to his x-ray discovery anniversary. The three founding societies formally recognised the day on November 28, 2011, during the annual conference of the RSNA in Chicago.
By accident, Wilhelm Conrad R?ntgen discovered x-rays on November 8, 1895, while studying cathode rays. This discovery essentially established radiology as a medical specialty. This finding would expand to encompass a variety of imaging techniques and become an indispensable component of contemporary medicine. Eventually, it was decided that November 8th would be a suitable day to commemorate the festivities, which are honoured by radiological groups worldwide.
