On International Nurses day, I wish we had a bigger way to say thank you to all health professionals for your service...

Every ANZAC Day, I write a short text message to my friend Jules. She works for NSW Health and her husband served in the Australian Army. They’ve been together for over 15 years and she worked as a nurse while he served in East Timor and Afghanistan. They spent months apart at a time while he was overseas or stationed in Townsville. His job was so important and I just like to take the day to pause and think of the life I get because someone does that job. The text message is simple but customised to them. It reads something like “Hello my favourite service family, I hope you have a beautiful day celebrating today. I have nothing but love and respect for your little family. Thank you for all your sacrifices.”
At Australian Healthcare Week recently, I was just saddened to hear first hand how much the last two years have affected our healthcare staff. Those on the frontline and their families supporting them are reporting burnout and depression at alarming rates. They’ve been battling covid and everything that has come with it. They’ve been scared of catching it, scared of taking it home to their families, under-resourced, understaffed and underpaid. And they keep serving us, sacrificing so much in the process.
International Nurses Day is a great start but I think it’s time for a National Day to say thank you for their service too. Who agrees?
