International Men's Day: Q&A with Energy Consultant Abel Ayettey

Today is a cause for a double celebration! Not only is it #InternationalMensDay, but it’s also our Energy Consultant Abel Ayettey ’s birthday! From starting with us a year ago as a Graduate Consultant to achieving a well-deserved promotion to Energy Consultant, Abel has thrived in the energy industry. To mark his one-year anniversary in the energy industry, we caught up with Abel to reflect on his year of success and growth!

Looking back on your first year as a Graduate Consultant, what are some key experiences or projects that stand out? How has your perspective on the energy industry evolved during this time?

Reflecting on my first year as a Graduate Consultant, one standout experience was delving into the analysis of non-commodity data for a client. This project showed me the variety of data items that can contribute a singular value, which highlighted the diverse teams involved in the industry. It broadened my perspective, providing a comprehensive view of the energy industry’s complexity.

What aspects of the energy industry have you found most exciting or challenging, and how have these experiences shaped your professional growth?

I’ve found problem-solving quite enjoyable, so all challenges have come with their excitement! Early on, it was quite challenging to navigate the various amount of case types to resolve. Working through this variety has helped foster a strong level of creativity and collaboration when encountering unique problems to solve.

You have an impressive background in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Oxford. How have these skills contributed to your success in the energy industry, and what advice do you have for graduates aspiring to enter this field?

Having a degree in Mathematics and Statistics has been very helpful in my approach to data analysis and provided a solid foundation for navigating the intricacies of energy data. My advice for aspiring graduates would be to maintain a strong analytical mindset, embrace continuous learning, and seek opportunities to apply mathematical and statistical principles to real-world challenges!

Congratulations on your promotion to Energy Consultant! Can you share some insights into how this transition has impacted your role and responsibilities? What goals do you have for the coming year as an Energy Consultant?

With this transition, my role has evolved towards building stronger client relationships and establishing new connections. My goal is to solidify my existing relationships further and become a trusted point of contact for newer clients, providing reliable assistance with their challenges.

You've made significant contributions to our valued clients. Could you highlight a project or accomplishment that you are particularly proud of from your first year?

One project I am quite proud of is my work on a tool focussed on sites that go through a change of supplier. It has been quite rewarding to start from the first principles of how we can identify cases where a change of supplier has occurred, to building that up into a tool that efficiently collates all the relevant data and provides a view that identifies valuable cases to action.

And finally, to honour #InternationalMenDay, tell us which male figure inspires you and why.

John Snow (the 19th-century physician, not the character from Game of Thrones) is a male figure who inspires me! He used data analysis to track and understand the source of a cholera outbreak in London. His work in epidemiology demonstrated the power of data-driven decision-making, which is something that resonates with me.

?Thank you for sharing your reflections, Abel, and here's to another year of achievements and growth!
