International Love Data Week 2023

It’s no secret that we love data at NIGMS. We use data to drive what we do, just as the scientists we fund use data to inform their research. We’re celebrating International Love Data Week (February 13-17) by highlighting a few NIGMS-funded researchers who are using data to positively impact human health!?

美国斯坦福大学 associate professor Nima Aghaeepour , Ph.D., is using artificial intelligence to mine data from electronic health records to identify patients who are likely to develop sepsis or other conditions. “Ultimately, I hope to create a platform that helps us predict what’s going to happen to a patient and suggest interventions that can modulate their immune system to prevent adverse outcomes,” he says. Read our interview with him and other sepsis researchers.?

Darrell Dinwiddie , Ph.D., and Daryl Domman, Ph.D., at The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center were the first to discover a case of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19—in their state. Their data enabled the New Mexico Department of Health to rapidly put measures in place to mitigate its spread. Catch the full story in our blog post.?

NIGMS also helps to fund the RCSB Protein Data Bank —the single global repository for 3D structural data of proteins, DNA, RNA, and other molecules used by researchers around the world. Knowing the structures of proteins and other biological molecules helps scientists understand their roles in human health and disease and leads to the discovery of new and more effective medications. We celebrated 50 years of the Protein Data Bank on the blog.?
