International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day

Literacy is not just about educating. It can be used as a powerful tool to eradicate poverty and a strong means for social and human progress.

International Literacy Day takes place on 8th?September every year and was founded by proclamation of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, (UNESCO), in 1967.

Latest reports from?UNESCO?show at least 771 million adults worldwide, most of whom are woman, lack basic reading and writing skills.

Literacy is important in the fact that it helps maintain brain health, helps community participation, is effective in communication, can help with employment advancement and is key to personal empowerment.

The theme for International Literacy Day this year is “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces” and its focus will be urging people to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all individuals around the globe.

Literacy Day activities include, donating books, gifting books and helping start a community lending library.?
