International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Women thriving in technology
As the world commemorates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, we at Enlitia are proud to shine a spotlight on the remarkable achievements of women in the field of science. Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Beatriz Coelho , one of our esteemed Enlighters and our Project Manager.
Beatriz's journey into the domain of environmental and energy engineering began with a desire to make a positive impact on our planet and explore sustainable living. In this exclusive interview, she shares insights into her experiences, challenges, and triumphs as a woman working in a (still) male-dominated industry.
Q1: Beatriz, could you tell us about your journey into the field of environmental and energy engineering? What inspired you to pursue this path?
"My journey into the field of environmental and energy engineering began with a desire to make a positive impact on our planet and learn how sustainably we could live. This interest led me to pursue a degree in environmental engineering, where I was able to explore solutions to complex environmental challenges while also delving into the realm of renewable energy. The need for sustainable solutions and environmental issues made me think this was an area I would feel challenged and interested in comparison to others."
Q2: As a woman in science and tech, what unique challenges have you faced throughout your career, particularly in roles traditionally dominated by men?
"As a woman in science and tech, there are always some challenges, although times are changing and it's becoming more normal for women to be present in these areas. There are still some biases and stereotypes, but there are ways to deal with them and break down those barriers.
It's all about soft skills, dealing with people depends always on the person you are talking to and the approach you need to have to make sure they understand your value and your interest in the topic."

Q3: Have you encountered any specific instances where being a woman has positively influenced your approach to problem-solving or innovation in your work?
"I don't think being a woman influenced my approach to problem-solving or innovation. Or at least I don't see it like that. I'll always bring my perspective and approach to challenges, as Beatriz. In my experience, the importance of collaboration, empathy and problem-solving is what makes the difference. Whether you are a man or a woman, you need to empathise with people and try to provide the best environment for others to work with you."
Q4: How do you think companies like ours can create more inclusive environments that value and empower women in STEM disciplines?
"Firstly, fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion starts at the top, with leadership setting the tone and prioritising diversity initiatives. This doesn't mean necessarily activities or initiatives just for women, means that when initiatives and activities are planned, just think if they would be generally suitable also for women."
Q5: What advice would you give to aspiring women in science and technology who may be facing barriers or doubts about pursuing their dreams?
"My advice to aspiring women in science and technology who may be facing barriers or doubts about pursuing their dreams is to believe in yourself and never underestimate your abilities. Surround yourself with supportive colleagues and allies who can help you navigate challenges and provide guidance along the way. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself or others and speak up for what you believe in. Stay resilient, stay determined, and don't let anyone else define your worth or limit your potential."
As we conclude our conversation with Beatriz, we are reminded of the immense impact that women continue to make in the field of science. Her story serves as a beacon of inspiration, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion in driving innovation and progress.
On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting and empowering women in STEM fields. Together, we can create a more inclusive, equitable and enlightened future, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the advancement of science and technology.
