For our last post for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the ladies of our Melbourne laboratory!
Women in Science – Chloe Dragwidge
I knew I desired a career in science during the later years of high school. I found that the more I learnt, the more questions I had and was continually excited by how our minds and bodies functioned. Overwhelmed by the potential avenues in science I could pursue, I decided to complete a Bachelors in Biomedical Science. My interest in disease flourished, as I learnt the complex characteristics of pathogens and their ability to evolve. I went on to complete an internship at Barwon Health where I was introduced to a research lab environment, and am now greatly enjoying my position at Symbio Laboratory in Melbourne. I look forward to my career development at Symbio and am eager to learn and grow my skills in the food industry.

Women in Science – Sarah Batticciotto
After completing my Honours with a project based on the rapid isolation of Campylobacter, I started my career in Food and Environmental testing at a small Laboratory based in North Melbourne. My initial role began in the media preparation department and within 1 year I was promoted to Microbiologist. After gaining some good skills and NATA signatory status, I moved onto another private Food Testing Laboratory where I gained further technical skills as well as have the opportunity to develop my management skills, working my way up from Team Leader to Assistant Manager. I was fortunate to get the opportunity to join Symbio in 2016, a fast growing, progressive and supportive laboratory. At Symbio Laboratories as Laboratory Manager, I am able to draw on previous experience but also gain many new technical and management skills while balancing family life with 2 children. As a full time working mother, there are always challenges, but the flexibility and support that Symbio offers me, as well as the support of my family, has allowed me to remain in this role and continue to grow. ?
