What is International Day of Women and Girls in Science?
International Day of Women and Girls in Science was established by the United Nations (UN) to promote equality and awareness of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
When is International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrated?
It is celebrated annually on February 11 to coincide with the birthday of Marie Curie – a pioneering physicist and chemist, who is renowned for her work in radioactivity and contribution to the treatment of cancer.
Why is International Day of Women and Girls in Science important?
The purpose of International Day of Women and Girls in Science is to promote STEM careers and address the misconceptions about gender representation in these areas. In NHS Wales, 60% of healthcare science professionals are women and it is important that we appropriately reflect diversity across all our work and activities.
