International Day of Women and Girls in Science

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Yesterday, we celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.?

We asked Satu Tuurna, Product Manager of Lifetime Assessment in Finland, and Director of Research Development Innovation at Kiwa Spain, Rosa Valenzuela, what inspired them to pursue a career in science and how we can encourage more women and girls into the field.

Here's what they had to say:

What inspired you to pursue a career in science?

(Satu)?"At high school I was already interested in chemistry and physics; such as the utilization of different analyzing methods. And then at technical university materials technology attracted me; how different aspects affect material properties and usability. This lead me to purse a career in science."

(Rosa)?"Everything inspires me: science, technology, humanities. I have a curious nature. I've always been especially interested in data science, AI, systems interoperability and language standardization. That's our universal expression to understand almost everything. Data is like a set of neurons. A single neuron is not intelligent, but through connected neurons, intelligence emerges, no matter the environment. I also like that data gives us the information we need to create a more sustainable world for the environment, and for people."

What challenges do you think some women and girls may face in entering this field and what tips can you give to overcome them?

(Stau) "Attitudes towards women have definitely changed during my career, at least I feel the treatment is more equal now. You just have to believe yourself and don't let the doubts of others discourage you. A career in technology is possible."

(Rosa)?"Sometimes it's difficult to list the challenges,?there are many, and for men too. But this aside, we still have to break barriers and recognize that the work we do today is for generational change that will arrive tomorrow.

How do you think we can encourage more girls into science?

(Satu) "We can encourage more girls into science through the visibility of female scientists, but it’s important for men to inspire female students too."

(Rosa)?"We can encourage others by our everyday actions. It's important to be a voice for them."

What advice can you give to young women considering a career in science or technology-related careers?

(Rosa)?"Never stop dreaming. Never stop trying. And most importantly, never give up!"

Are there any women in science who have inspired you?

(Rosa)?"There are plenty of men and woman from past and present who inspire me, but those who inspire me the most, without any doubt, are the women in my work environment. All Kiwa women are warriors! They are my inspiration!"
