International Day For The Protection Of Children
The 1st of June is traditionally associated with the International Day for the Protection of Children. For those unaware, according to records from UN agencies, the global population of children and young people under eighteen stands at 656,640,181. Nearly twice the size of the entire USA population.
The rights of children and young people have never been more critical. However, the interests of the child are often subject to decline, especially in those fragile parts of the world where human rights are either underdeveloped or undermined.
At This Life, we focus on supporting government agencies and helping to inform and reform laws and policies so that new and improved opportunities and advantages for children can emerge.
Examples of our work include the development of a new Kindergarten inside Siem Reap Prison. This pioneering early-years learning facility provides invaluable support and learning opportunities for children accompanying their mothers inside prison following sentence. This facility has had an uplifting effect on very young children and offers vital pre and postnatal care and mental health support for women who are pregnant and incarcerated.

This Life is also proud to have helped pioneer the development of youth diversion programs in Cambodia. This enables young people in conflict with the law to benefit from community-based activities instead of imprisonment. For younger people, this facility preserves their access to state education. For others, it provides them with practical and alternative learning pathway that helps them improve their employment prospects and future livelihoods. This innovation also helps reduce pressure on an otherwise overcrowded prison system.
