In September 2022, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September as the annual International Day for Interventional Cardiology, to raise public awareness of cardiovascular diseases, procedures and related complications. The day is also an opportunity to highlight the latest technological advancements and promote access to life-saving treatments. For Scotland, the International Day for Interventional Cardiology holds particular importance as the country faces specific challenges in cardiovascular health. According to research from the British Heart Foundation, released in August 2023, around 700,000 people in Scotland are living with heart and circulatory issues.
The charity is the largest independent funder of heart and circulatory disease research in Scotland, having invested over £50 million in more than 100 projects. The British Heart Foundation also support over 300 scientists in universities across the country, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, and St Andrews.
It has also established two Centres of Research Excellence at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow, which encourage innovative approaches in the fight against heart disease by bringing together leading scientists from different disciplines. Currently the charity is working with the universities on several projects including the creation of an AI-based tool to help diagnose heart attacks more accurately. You can read more about the work of the charity and Centres of Research Excellence here.
