What you should know about the day?

The United Nations General Assembly declared January 26 International Day of Clean Energy to raise awareness and mobilise action for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet.?

Why is this day significant??

In a world challenged by the impact of climate change, clean yet sustainable energy plays a vital role in reducing emissions, with huge benefits to communities and the world economy. United Nations statistics reveal that approximately 675 million people live in the dark, and 4 in 5 of these people live in sub-Saharan Africa.?

Amidst Africa’s rising population and economic challenges, one thing is clear: the current energy paradigm in Africa is not sustainable. Africa’s dependence on fossil fuels and unsustainable energy sources such as petroleum and wood is contributing to climate change. At the same time, lack of access to clean energy and reliable power hinders education, healthcare, and economic opportunities in Africa. The United Nations has thus warned that if current trends in energy access continue, one in four people will still use unsafe and inefficient cooking systems by 2030.?

The International Day of Clean Energy serves to increase awareness of the role of clean energy in expanding universal access to energy and to promote global initiatives aimed at achieving the goals set out in the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda, as well as offer an overview of the negotiated outcomes achieved at COP28 in relation to the promotion of clean energy.?
