Internal Division and Wounding

Internal Division and Wounding

As children in the natural whole state, conflict is dealt with through internal division or wounding. For example, as a child if your parent behaves in contradictory ways he is considered two different beings, rather than one being with two modes of behavior. This preserves the integrity of the parent and by reflection the child's sense of wholeness.

But deep within this view and strategy of dealing with the world and its inconsistencies, contradictions, and paradoxes the organism becomes divided within itself. As a result of the inner conflict there is an impulse toward resolution, expressed in internal dialogue, mental and physical restlessness, muscular contractions, and other physical expressions and holdings of repressed emotions. The human being becomes segmented: split, divided, fractured, or splintered in a dissociative state of trauma.

Because this trauma and resultant dissociation appears to be irreconcilable, the human being falls into repetitive cycles of response. The danger of departing from the repetition poses too significant a risk to the organism, which is now chiefly concerned with its own survival in a world that has proved untrustworthy, unpredictable, and hostile.

We know the outcome of these repetitive cycles of response as emotional-behavioral patterns. They represent the calcifying of repetition into chronic patterning. These patterns, constantly proved to ensure safety and survival, are further refined and cemented as the backbone of defensive strategy: the Central Character Dynamic, which we discuss in module 9 of Sacred Attention Therapy Online Training, Level 1.

All this is performed in service to the essence or core self, to conceal the unchanged pearl of precious being -- our psyche or soul. Much has been made of this concealment and protection and the journey to internal healing, but little has been said or understood about how specifically the soul emerges from its internal prison.

Love this post, Richard. An understanding of our behavior as sensible, given our patterning, conditions, success with a past strategy, is often the beginning of self-compassion. Thank you for sharing this.

Similar work to what I do, and it is indeed true that 'A house divided cannot stand' best wishes for the new year!
