Is internal communication really that important?

I implement great internal communication strategy to help leaders through strong people engagement
Working in internal communication is great, it's so rewarding, but hard work too.
This year I'm going to be sharing some of my wisdom each Wednesday to not only help people who may be struggling with how to communicate effectively, but to help stimulate and create debate by bringing together a few thoughts and ideas.
So, is internal communication really that important?
The short answer is yes... but as that would make for a rather boring article, let me write on...
While internal communications is nothing new, the discipline has really come into its own over the last 10 years, with even greater focus coming through Covid.
It's important to understand why...
It helps teams work together:
Silos stifle and limit creativity, internal communications can help break this and enable colleagues to work together across teams, departments, and locations. It also encourages insight sharing, suggestions and solutions
By communicating regularly and openly, employees can learn from each other, spark new ideas, and create a culture of innovation.
It drives engagement and retention with your colleagues:
If colleagues know what's happening in your organisation they're going to feel valued, respected, and involved in the organisation's vision and goals.
Better still if you can recognise and celebrate success, you're going to get a whole load of extra benefit. Build trust, loyalty, and commitment through talking and listening to them.
It makes you money:
Being blunt, happy colleagues equal a happy board room. If your colleagues understand and engage with your vision and are rewarded well, they're not going to walk... In fact they'll work that little bit more to make things happen.

Internal Communication isn't just the nice fully stuff, this can help with your bottom line too, and it doesn't stop there...
Customers love it:
Happy colleagues mean that customers get a better deal too. We've all seen great (and not so great) customer service in our lives. I'd guess that nine times out of ten that the great service is as a result of engaged and well communicated to colleagues who get what the customers need...
And we all know what happy customers mean, more sales that help your bottom line.
Final thought:
Of course, there is so much more that could be said, but in conclusion, internal communications should be central to any organisations plans in 2024.
