Intern Spotlight: Tomer Brezner, Data Engineer and Business Intelligence Intern

Tomer, one of our summer interns is finishing up his time with us in the next few months. After becoming a customer and self-directed investor with Questrade, Tomer sought a role within the intern program at Questrade Financial Group. Now working as a Data Engineer and Business Intelligence Developer intern, Tomer and his supportive team work on exciting digital projects including new developments for our QuestMortgage line of business.?

We wanted to learn more about Tomer, his journey to Questrade, and some of the key takeaways from his intern program experience.?

What school do you attend and what is the name of your program?

I’m entering my fifth and final year of Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Management Sciences at the University of Waterloo. The Biomedical Engineering aspect is centered around engineering innovative solutions for complex health-related challenges through medical device development and healthcare system design. The Management Sciences aspect focuses on technology strategy, analytics, decision analysis, and managing complex systems.

Why did you choose Questrade?

In late 2020, I began to gain interest in the world of investing. Through the recommendation of a family friend, I started self-directed investing using the trading platform. I enjoyed using the platform, and Questrade’s mission to help Canadians become more financially successful and secure is something that truly resonates with me.

Luckily, Questrade was hiring! My close colleagues also had an opportunity to work at this fantastic company, and I received recommendations that it was a great place to work at. I also had previous experience as a Business Analyst at another technology company and wanted to apply my skill set in FinTech.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

What I’ve enjoyed most about my internship is Questrade’s culture and the people that I work with. From day one, I’ve felt like an empowered team member, where I can take ownership of tasks and initiatives and bring value to my team. I work alongside extremely talented and dedicated individuals, who’ve offered guidance, mentorship, and best practices.

Additionally, Questrade is a diverse and global company. With offices in Canada, Armenia, Ukraine, Brazil, Barbados, and Israel, there are a lot of different cultures and different faces to talk to and learn from. It has truly been a pleasure to work with people from around the world.

A project that you're most proud of?

There have been a multitude of projects I have been able to work on during my time at Questrade. This includes projects within different lines of business such as banking, insurance, and mortgages. One ongoing project has been developing an executive-level dashboard for QuestMortgage.

As a Data Engineer and Business Intelligence developer, I’m able to work on a multitude of tasks. For example building out data pipelines, business reports, and dashboards that unlock key insights for the business. The impact is immediate, as business intelligence can truly empower and enable better decision-making within the company, which ultimately supports the realization of Questrade’s vision.

Any tips for future interns?

To all future interns, I would say this: Be confident in your abilities, take ownership for your work, and always have an open mind. Within my team, the “stupid questions” always tend to lead to great ideas, which unlocks the potential for building out better solutions collaboratively.
