Intermodal Provides a Greener Transportation Option

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day during the COVID-19 pandemic, I find myself especially proud of our team in Intermodal. We have kept our terminals open, practicing proper hygiene and social distancing so our customers can continue to ship essential goods across North America. I’m incredibly grateful for our team of #everydayheroes and thrilled that XPO announced an appreciation pay program today.

 I’m equally proud of the way the rail option supports sustainability. Shipping by rail reduces GHG emissions by 75% compared to highway transportation. In 2019, XPO moved 240,000 rail shipments in the US, reducing GHG emissions by over 600 million metric tons. You can read more about XPO’s sustainability efforts at https://sustainability.xpo.com/

Our sustainability focus has also led to the launch this year of XPO Connect, a customer interface that not only allows customers to track their freight, but also makes recommendations to help them reduce their carbon footprint.
