Intermittent Fasting - Whether it really works??


Nowadays IF has become a rage and it is only got popularised after the scientist has proved how autophagy works but in ancient India it is always a practice and had been a part of the tradition.

There are Few things you should know why the IF is so effective and why it works:

1.      Primitive Nature of our Body: Our Environment has changed and evolved our surroundings has changed but our body has not evolved yet. Just think of you in one of the Bear Grylls show hunting for food and basically our body is made like that we are made to eat only when the food is available and the current advocacy of having small meals are putting a lot of pressure on our system since we are not giving our body to recover from the food.

2.      Insulin: Insulin is a Fat making hormone which is released every time you put anything in your mouth and thus start creating Fat from the food we had. So, imagine one thing if you are always having something during the day you are telling your body to store fat and supress the fat reducing hormone (Glucagon) which you have never given a chance to do its work which might as well cause Insulin Resistance in the Long Run.

3.       Growth Hormone: Making your body hungry gives your body to also release growth hormones which are very essential for making your body increase the immunity and performing multiple essentials functions.

4.      Autophagy or Cellular Repair: when you fast, your body starts repairing itself cellular and replacing the old damaged cells with the new one.


Method of Fasting:

You can do fasting multiple ways:

1.      16 hours fast and 8 hours eating window, or you can reduce the eating window 1-2 hours but gradually decrease the eating window. (Most effective)

2.      Fasting on the alternative days (Effective)

3.      I am a stern non believer in 5:2 as it suggests reducing the caloric intake for 2 days and eat normally during the 5 days, but this defeats the very logic of doing the fast.
