Interior Voyages
The photographer Matthieu Salvaing rightfully falls into the category of those who can blend, in an intimate image, colors, art, amazing houses, and the people who call them home.
His new book Interior Voyages features a collection of houses he visited through the years, describing, with precision, the feeling a particular room evokes.
There are two kinds of photographers.
First, those who, when introducing themselves, talk about career, technique, light, and framing. Then there are those who do not talk about anything, except for photography: colors, art, amazing houses, and the people who call them home.
The rising star of interior design photography Matthieu Salvaing rightfully falls into the second category, according to journalist Paul-Henry Bizon, who created the preface of his book Interior Voyages.
Twenty-five houses and a movie set
Interior Voyages by Matthieu Salvaing is a collection of pictures of twenty-five houses and a movie set, scattered around the world, visited by the photographer through the years.
The book explores some of the most evocative homes of well-known creatives, from painters to filmmakers, alongside some of the most fantastic works of twentieth-century modernism, including works by Aalto, Niemeyer, Le Corbusier, and Barragán.
What we loved the most are the images of Milan’s Villa Necchi, built by Piero Portaluppi in the ‘30s, and the pictures of John Lautner's incredible Casa Marbrisa in Acapulco.
The feeling of a room
With a unique eye, Matthieu Salvaing's lens does more than transport the viewer to a specific interior. With his artful manipulation of light, he describes, with precision, the feeling that a particular room evokes.
“I wanted to share my perspective on certain places, extraordinary for their story and character”, he says. “I am not a fan of the homogeneity of styles that followed globalization. My selection followed two guidelines: uniqueness and humanity of places I have photographed”.
A glimpse of the house owners’ dream
If Interior Voyages is a journey in these interiors’ intimacy, what strikes the most is discovering the alchemy between the dream of the owners, the architect that made it real, and the designers that gave it a soul.
