The Interior Design Process
Charmaine White
Associate Director Interior Design at HollandGreen. Council of directors at The British Institute of Interior Design.
Last month I went LIVE on instagram to talk about the interior design process and what you can expect when working with The White House Interiors.
Our work specialises and focuses on entire projects, starting with the initial design concept right through to supply installation and those all important finishing touches!
In order to achieve a professionally designed and styled aesthetic, much like you see in the glossy interior magazines and your social media feed, there is a process to be followed. If deviated from you could end up with a less than desirable outcome, so having faith in us and allowing us to guide you through the many many decisions that need to be made on a renovation project, WILL in fact make the entire process a less stressful for you.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU / TAKING A BRIEF
Each new project begins with taking a brief. This is an ideal time for us to discuss your routine, how you exist, how you wish to feel in the spaces, your hopes and inspiration for your rooms.
We interpret what we learn about your patterns, tastes and aspirations, to create spaces that perfectly express our unique approach to design solutions. So, a deep level of understanding is crucial.
CONCEPT DESIGNS
We present our initial plans, sketches, joinery concepts and materials illustrating the architectural elements alongside carefully selected materials, fabrics and furnishings to share our overall vision and guiding narrative.
This stage is very abstract and collaborative as we are essentially setting the creative tone and design direction for your project.?
DETAILED DESIGN
The next stage is the considered, documented detailed design stage. It is also the longest part of the process as we fine tune the schemes that we are proposing.
This may include, but is not limited to designing bespoke joinery, obtaining costings for bespoke furniture, curtains and blinds, lighting and electrical plans, fabrics and furnishings plus many other technical elements. By the end of this stage you will have a clear understanding of what your space will not only look like but also the furnishing investment total for your project.

EXECUTION
Once all of the designs and costings have been agreed and signed off, we move on to purchasing and execution. Timing is dependent on the scope of the project and the availability of the contractor.
We are placing orders, tracking deliveries and resolving deficiencies throughout this stage of the process. If you shop online and have ever had to deal with customer services, you will have some idea of what this involves. Times that by over 200 individual items needing to be ordered and shipped to various locations and vendors… you get the picture!
We offer design implementation, where we liaise and communicate with your chosen contractor the details of our designs to ensure the elements are built to the correct specification, transforming our vision into reality.
INSTALLATION
Once the dust has quite literally settled, me and my team will deliver and install all of the lovely pieces we’ve selected, ordered and had made. We go about hanging mirrors, artwork, laying rugs, lamps, positioning furniture, dressing windows and of course plumping cushions and styling decorative accessories, adding the finishing touches to your spaces.
We hand back your completed rooms and provide our care guide to maintain your new furnishings and finishes.
