Interior Design Advice: Bathrooms

Whether you want a sanctuary or a wow factor space, read our Interior Design advice and tips for your bathroom space.

When designing your new bathroom make sure you get professional help with some high-quality sketches and drawings. It can really make such a big difference to see your design elevated and/or in 3D to allow for a realistic idea of how much space you will have to move around in the room and for any changes otherwise too late to change after it has been built. This is what we refer to as intelligent design.

The perfect bathroom is aligning the materials with the architecture and design style of your house. Another good reason to get professional advice here.

Invest in new technology. With low-energy LED lighting and wireless Bluetooth speakers streaming music, the bathroom has become a place to linger at the end of a long day.

Lighting

Use combinations of concealed linear lighting to give a very soft, subtle glow – those add a certain beautiful, warm quality to the space. You’ve then got your more functional lighting, downlighters in the ceiling. Also add in the finer, more elegant quality of the decorative lighting which adds a lovely touch and makes the bathroom feel “designed”. If space allows also for it use beautiful, decorative wall lights and if ceilings are high its always gorgeous to add a lovey pendant or chandelier which really gives you that elegant and luxurious feel.

Flooring

Bathroom floors need to be hardworking, impervious to water, and slip-resistant--but they also need to be attractive. The most luxurious choices are stone tiles and ceramic tiles, but highly polished stone is slippery when wet. Choose a honed flooring finish for better traction. And always underfloor heating when possible. Loved by everyone.

Ventilation

If you overlook the ventilation in your bathroom, you’ll regret it later. That’s because poor ventilation in a room that contains a lot of moisture is a recipe for disaster. Not only will you likely experience a build-up of mould on your walls, you’ll also have the headache of constant condensation on your windows, mirrors and shower cubicles.

Cabinets

As with kitchen cabinets, you can purchase bathroom cabinets in stock units or with semicustom options, or you can have them custom-designed and built. This is where you get to make such a big difference to the room with your personal style. And with their main purpose of storage, so important to avoid a bathroom with clutter.

Furniture and add-on’s

A good symmetry within the bathroom with a key centrepiece, whether it be a structural piece of marble that’s beautifully book matched or a fantastic bath that provides a key arrangement.

To add comfort and functionality to the room place a lovely armchair by the bath.

Mirrors

Mirrors are a key. Not everyone is fortunate to have enormous space in their bathroom and mirrors can be vastly important in trying to create that perception of space. But doing it subtly rather than just putting a big mirror on the wall. Break it up. Use different sections, use a bevel edged, frame it in marble, frame it in metal – there are many different ways and opportunities to enhance the layering of the

Comfort

What colours or personal comforts make you feel the most at home, relaxed and rejuvenated? Even though many people might consider neutrals or soft tones the most soothing colour scheme, that’s the great thing about designing your own spa-ambience. You’re in control!

Maybe this time of year you’d feel most refreshed with a pop of pink on a few throw pillows to bring the hope and joy of spring to your home. Every season or even the day’s weather can inspire you to switch things up for your own wellbeing.

You can get that relaxing vibe by surrounding yourself with plants, textures from nature like wood cutting boards or baskets, pretty flowers in a vase or art with natural scenes.

Last but not least, towels. Invest in beautiful and high-quality towels. Makes all the difference.
