Interior decorator or interior designer, which is right for you?

With almost 20 years’ experience as an interior designer, I am still often asked if I can help with curtains or cushions. While I can assist with those tasks, they are not the core of what I do. Unfortunately, TV programs like "Changing Rooms" and various interior design shows have blurred the lines between the roles of an interior designer and an interior decorator. I want to clarify the difference, without discrediting any talented interior decorators, so you can choose the right professional for your specific needs.

An interior decorator is generally experienced in:

• Creating a style, look, and ambiance.
• Selecting colours and finishes
• Furnishing a space with items such as curtains, cushions, etc.
• Decorating and accessorising, including artwork and other décor
• Window dressing
• Lighting selection and arrangement
• Liaising with suppliers
• Managing a budget
• Procurement and delivery

An interior designer is typically degree-qualified and experienced in:

• Interior architecture
• History of design
• Spatial design and space utilisation – balancing form and function
• Ergonomics
• Computer-aided design (CAD)
• Understanding and applying building regulations
• Knowledge of products and furniture
• Acoustics
• Colour theory
• Flooring design
• Ceiling design
• Lighting design
• Bespoke joinery
• Selecting decorations and materials
• Collaborating with architects, building services, structural engineers, and contractors
• Liaising with suppliers and manufacturers
• Detailed design
