Hello all,

Happy Friday to our 2,138 readers. This week has been exciting, I attended the 10th International Symposium on Fretting Fatigue. There were many excellent presentations and it was wonderful to network with so many academics in the fretting sphere. I've missed conferences these past 2 years; the adventure of travelling somewhere new and presenting your work to your peers is a deeply rewarding experience. I look forward to more events like this.

Research highlights: Highly cited

Corrosion presents numerous challenges to the tribologist in the multi-disciplinary coupling of engineering, materials science and chemistry. The importance of materials studies to the identification of corrosion mechanisms is explored by Zhang et al. in "Localized corrosion in AA2024-T351 aluminium alloy: Transition from intergranular corrosion to crystallographic pitting".

Interesting Infographics

Publications are the lifeblood of academia but patents are the mark of success in industry. This infographic from Visual Capitalist shows the top 25 companies with the most new patents in 2021.

Tribology Resources: Upcoming Event

The integration of smart sensing into engineering parts will be key to meeting future challenges and advancing technology. Prof Ling Wang of nCATS, University of Southampton recently spoke on this topic for intelligent bearing systems.

The IOP is hosting "Future of Digital Technology" with collaboration from the IMechE and the University of Southampton on the 23rd November 2022 at the Chilworth Axis Conference Campus, Southampton, UK. For those in our audience interested in the cutting edge of tribology research and the move towards digitalisation, this event will be a must to attend. The programme and registration will be available soon but mark your calendars!

Chere it out here.

From our Partner

Oerlikon is the first worldwide surface solutions provider. Thanks to a wide range of solutions with diffusion treatments (Plasma Nitriding), thin films (few micrometres applied via PVD or/and PACVD technologies), thick films (thermal spay or laser cladding technologies) and additive manufacturing, Oerlikon can answer to most of the requests and serve markets such as Energy, Transportation, Medical, Semiconductor and many other industrial applications.

Oerlikon Balzers, Metco and AM provide parts or coatings but also support, knowledge about tribology and the behaviours that these solutions can have against lubricants, oils and particles. With a recent internal Applications Lab and a global footprint, Oerlikon can develop both local and global solutions in partnership with the customers.

Notable and quotable

"I make more mistakes than anyone else I know, and sooner or later, I patent most of them." - Thomas A. Edison

What we’re reading

Mechanical watches are almost unmatched in their beauty and elegance. Manufacturers such as Rolex have spent many years honing their craft in the micron precision of components and the development of new lubricants. Read more about their tribological work here.

An app a day

I was recently recommended XMind as a fast and intuitive mind-mapping application. It's available on desktop operating systems, Android, iOS and even has a web version. As a bonus, there's a pitch to make your mind map into a slideshow. I was able to create a map in minutes!
