Intergenerational Leadership - What is it?

A new forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide shows that organizations will spend nearly $1 trillion on the Future of Work (FoW) in 2023, an increase of 18.8% over 2022 which is spent on: Augmentation, Culture, and Space.

The Future of Work (an informed perspective on what businesses and other organizations need to know about how work could shift (given digitization and other trends), plus how workforces and workplaces can prepare for those changes, big and small according to McKinsey & Company) is rapidly growing, perhaps because we just came out of the pandemic, the #greatresignation, #quietquitting, equity pay gap issues, remote working demands for good, digital technologies, and a dynamic shift in diversity equity and inclusion, burnout and more. Furthermore, organizations are struggling to figure out how to manage Gen Z employees. "We know that there are over 60 million Gen Z workers, and Gen Z are well on their way to becoming the most influential group in the workplace.’’ Gen Z matter, they are our now and our future and an important part of our economy. The concern is how much that is being spent on the Future of Work is actively being focused on Gen Z? At Boss Me In, which bridges intergenerational women together to solve for the Future of Work, creating inclusivity, connection and wellness, a key differentiator is that we know that intergenerational leadership is an answer for the Future of Work.

What is intergenerational leadership?

A leadership aware of the generational differences and their potential contributions, where leaders from different generations are clearly identified and mutually respected.

But in my conversations, even the largest corporations are still trying to figure out how to solve for the Future of Work. Boss Me In has answers.

Here's what I know Gen Z want:

  • Transparency.
  • Respect and empowerment of implementation of their voice, thoughts and ideas.
  • Mission alignment and purpose filled worked. They want their efforts to matter. To know that it's helping people in some way. That their making a positive impact for this world.
  • Collective collaborative thinking, thought leadership, brainstorming and empowerment of implementation of innovation they recommend.
  • Inclusion and fairness for all.
  • Leadership and learning opportunities.
  • Authentic leadership and honesty.
  • Caring, and caring changes on a daily basis due to all happening in young Gen Z's lives, the state of the world and rapid changes happening.
  • Mutual respect.
  • Explanation of how things work, why, openness and space to allow for honest questions.
  • Positive action.

Why is intergenerational leadership important?

The Future of Work is in danger if we don't acknowledge, plan for and change according to the new shift in demands by Gen Z. Questions that may be asked as a corporation are:

  • How to make money as a corporation?
  • How does work get done?
  • Who makes this all happen? People are an organization's most valuable asset.

Companies that focus on intergenerational leadership perform better. Companies that put people first is good business.

In fact, A Gartner study revealed that a highly inclusive environment can improve team performance by up to 30%. McKinsey & Company suggested that companies with the most diversity outperform those with the least by 36% in profitability.

I will write more soon with more particulars on "how" to implement what Gen Z are looking for for positive impact, growth leadership and learnings. What are your thoughts about Intergenerational Leadership?

Diversity and inclusion are good for business. The Gartner and McKinsey numbers simply make sense because the more diverse talent and opinions we have the more equipped we are to deal with the diver challenges ahead of us. It's simply common sense.
