Philanthropists Bench Women of Color, the M.V.P.s of Social Change
"I run a national public foundation, and I see up close that the people who are overrepresented in success at social change — women of color who lead grass-roots nonprofits — are wildly underrepresented in funding. Only 0.6 percent of foundation giving was targeted to women of color in 2016. The record for individual donors is not much better. Unfortunately, I see this everyday in Charlotte. The United Way reduced funding to the Girls Scout Hornets' Nest Council that was allocated for troops in low income areas of mostly black and brown girls. EmpowHERment, Inc and Firm Foundations have been dwarfed with the "get bigger so you can grow" mentality.
The author of the OpEd states "This approach benefits the mostly white-led groups that have, for decades, received generous support to grow, while groups headed by women of color have been systematically locked out of funding. The latter are then trapped in a cycle in which their budgets are never large enough to qualify them for the funding they need to increase their budgets."
Season of Giving
As you make your plans for the end of tax season 2019, I ask that you join me in donating to EmpowHERment & Firm Foundations two organizations led by under-paid, single full-time staff, women of color that are determined to change the narrative of "50 out of 50" despite the limited financial support from individuals, corporations and foundations in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Their mission is to increasing social capital of girls and women through 1:1 mentorship, talent development, and advocacy. They host monthly leadership activities and an annual summit for over 300 girls and women.
