Interesting Facts about?the?IELTS?Exam

You have probably heard that IELTS is one of the most popular English proficiency exams required by many institutions and companies in order to select students or workers that are going to join them. You have also probably heard a lot of misconceptions about the exam, like the belief among students that to achieve Band 9 in IELTS you must be a native English speaker. This is merely a myth, as in some cases native speakers score less than non-native speakers. If you are planning to take the IELTS, don’t let those myths confuse you. Read on to find some interesting facts about the IELTS test.

  • If you are a non-native speaker, you have the same chance of getting band 9 as native speakers do. It really depends on how much effort you put into preparing yourself for the exam.
  • No one can cheat on the IELTS test. This is because the questions you see on your test day do not get published anywhere else. You will see new questions each time you take the test.
  • Unlike in the TOEFL test, the speaking part in IELTS will be conducted face to face with an examiner. Don’t hesitate to ask the examiner to repeat the questions if you’re not clear yet, since it won’t affect your score. Your score will be based on your speaking ability, not listening.
  • Using complex words or sentences in both the speaking and writing sections in order to demonstrate your competence is surely important. However, be careful not to use the same words repeatedly and to use those sophisticated words correctly. Using them in unsuitable contexts will affect your final score.
