Interesting comparison between Project Information Model & Asset Information Model.

The Project Information Model (PIM) and Asset Information Model (AIM) serve different but interconnected purposes in an asset’s lifecycle.

Definitions from ISO 19650:

information: reinterpretable representation of data in a formalized manner suitable for communication, interpretation or processing.
information model: set of structured and unstructured information containers
information container: named persistent set of information retrievable from within a file, system or application storage hierarchy
Project Information Model: information model relating to the delivery phase
Asset Information Model: information model relating to the operational phase

  1. A Project Information Model is created during the design and construction phases of a project. It serves as a database for all data and documentation relevant to the project. An Asset Information Model, on the other hand, is used for managing the operational phase of an asset, containing updated data for maintenance, operation, and performance monitoring.
  2. A PIM supports design, construction, and delivery of the asset and AIM supports operations, maintenance, and lifecycle management of the asset.
  3. PIM exists during design and construction and AIM during asset's operational phase.
  4. PIM is used by designers, engineers, project managers & contractors and AIM is utilized by facility managers, operators and maintenance teams.
  5. The PIM serves as the input for the AIM.
