- The pandemic continued but the region has been improving its vaccination rate led by Chile. Chile was ranked by Bloomberg as the top country in the world in its Covid19 Resilience Ranking. Chileans are the?second-most?vaccinated population in the world.
- Peru and Chile elected new governments this year that were both left leaning. Peruvian President, Pedro Castillo, has had a difficult time but so far has been more moderate than many believed. He has had to deal with a hostile Congress. Gabriel Boric starts his term in March. He will have his work cut out for him as he deals with a right leaning Congress and a new constitution.
- Argentina similar to many countries started the year dealing with the pandemic. The country ended the year with a fragile economy and is negotiating with the International Monetary Fund to restructure more than $40 billion in debt the country cannot pay. The good news is that the mining industry has been doing well with some important announcements to the end year.
- Brazil was dealing with the fallout from the pandemic in 2021. President, Jair Bolsonaro, is under pressure over how he handled the COVID crisis. He will face stiff competition in next year’s election from left-wing former President,?Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The good news is that it had a positive trade balance of USD$60bn due to the fall of the real. It is the largest positive balance between imports and exports since 2017 and the second largest since official records began in 1989.
- Latin America received record amounts of investment in its startups in 2021. There have been countless new companies with interesting plans to use technology to improve the needs of its citizens and businesses. Investors have noticed. In the first half of the year, there was already $6.5 billion in venture capital compared to 2020 which ended the whole year with $4.1 billion.
