Interconnector projects and subsea tenders

The week behind us was marked by the announcement that a bunch of tenders were upcoming for the second interconnector between Malta and Sicily. InterConnect Malta, the company behind the project, already launched one and is planning to launch some more tenders at the end of this year and the start of 2024.

The interconnector will consist of a new ~118-kilometer-long 225 MW HVAC electrical cable interconnection through a submarine cable operating at 220kV between Maghtab in Malta and Ragusa in Sicily to be laid in parallel to the existing HVAC cable link which was commissioned in 2015.

InterConnect Malta has launched a tender for the transformer and shunt reactors for this electrical interconnector. Another tender will be launched this year, while a whole bunch will be issued in 2024.

Going north, Hartshead Resources NL and RockRose launched an invitation to tender for pipeline EPCI services for the Anning and Somerville fields located in the Southern North Sea

The announcement comes after the completion of the pipeline route survey, carried out by Gardline using the vessel Ocean Observer.

Speaking about surveys, Reach Subsea is about to begin a cable route seabed survey for SSEN Transmission’s Spittal to Peterhead HVDC transmission link offshore Scotland.

Survey vessel Viking Reach is expected to complete the work by January 7, 2024.

Italian cabling giant?Prysmian has completed the manufacturing of cables for the submarine power interconnection between Egypt and Saudi Arabia – the first-ever large-scale link?between the Middle East and North Africa.

The project’s cable route will cross the Gulf of Aqaba, spanning the territorial waters of Egypt and Saudi Arabia with a route length of approximately 20 kilometers and deep-water installation at around 900 meters.
