Intercom entry? Telecoms beats hardwire – here's 5 reasons why
Innovation – it’s one of my favourite words, alongside engineering. As someone who’s grown two UK businesses around the belief that things should be designed well, built well and engineered to last, I get a real kick when I see a pioneering concept adapted seamlessly for everyday use.
It makes me happy. I like solving problems with creative thinking. Being practical too.
But what’s that got to do with choosing the right telephone-based door, gate or barrier system for your residential development? Especially if you’re a local authority facing tough spending choices post-lockdown – or a developer squeezed by Covid’s impact on your returns?
The answer? Everything.
Because investing in a telephone-based intercom system isn’t just about getting value for money by choosing the most innovative products and services. It’s about ease of installation, maintenance and flexibility for you and your residents too.
So here’s my top five reasons for choosing today’s resilient, secure telecoms networks over the traditional hard-wired alternative, to achieve the results you want.
1: Cost: Fast, reliable, versatile: the major telecoms platforms are already powering our lives, so there’s no need to ‘reinvent the wheel’. With ulta-competitive tariffs, line provision and call charges can be rolled into low cost options and annual maintenance packages. Distance, direction and physical obstacles become irrelevant. You don’t need specialised equipment or handsets, either.
2: Installation: Two words: no cables. And no cables means minimal disruption and faster, cost-effective installation through the option to use occupants’ existing phones. These can be added or removed from the system remotely. Developments built in phases benefit from new numbers being swiftly connected. Even better, most intercom installations are completed in a day.
3: Maintenance and Support: Once up and running, little local maintenance is required. Site management and support programmes/training are available, while optional remote support can be provided with other services. Spare parts are readily available and easy to install, with upgrade options across all products.
4. Flexibility: the flexibility of modern tech means that static or mobile, cordless or fixed handsets of virtually any kind can be used anywhere within the property. Products can be modified or upgraded as necessary. Some can also be custom-built to meet specific requirements and architectural structures.
5: Health, Safety and Security: Arguably, your top priority and here telecoms-based intercoms come into their own. Reasons include the option for emergency services access and customised solutions for tenants living with disabilities. Security requirements can be tailored either by design and build, or programming and secure data. Live reporting means any issues can be quickly identified – and resolved.
By now, you can see why I’m still as passionate about my sector as I was when I started in 1988! And why my businesses’ commitment to delivering genuine value and sustainability for our clients has made us industry-leading pioneers in our field.

3 年Thank you for sharing your views. When you say no cables, what do you mean. What I mean is as follows. Yes, there's no data cables necessary in such an installation, but where does the power come from, or more specifically in the type of applications which you aim to deal with here with this concept in mind, how would you power the intercom at the end that the user interfaces with? I've had a similar conversation in the past re covert surveillance in high risk environs where problems are expected, but I don't want to prejudice your thinking.
