INTERACTION – The Skill to Communicate Effectively

Effective communication is one of the fundamental skills that we humans need to acquire, to be able to interact with one another, to put forward what we want to say as well as understand what other people say to us. In a layman’s term, this is simply the act of passing on messages, encoding and decoding the messages sent to us. This exchange of information enables development of effective relationships, cohesion and collaborations.

Communication as a skill stretches beyond what is usually understood as only verbal transmission, but also includes non-verbal cues like postures and body language , written messages or visual depictions such as pictures, logos, symbols etc. The exercise of communication is further, a two-way process which includes not only expressing but also listening intendedly and understanding the messages that are directed to us.

Something so natural to humans like the act of conveying their thoughts, is counted as one of the must-have skillsets for work and for personality development. This attributes to the greater need for all to develop and furnish on these skills. Effective interaction is of best value to us, not just professionally but also in our personal & social life. As we learn to express ourselves clearly we also make sure that we walk past misinterpretation and misunderstandings. We develop better people-skills as we pick up the right instructions from dialogues and discussions thereby we effortlessly tend to make better associations and connections in this process.

At work, the associate skills like teamwork, leadership, cooperation, public speaking or demonstrating positivity, are all linked to communication. With the right prowess to talk, respond, use of apt language, healthy eye-contact, a welcoming body language, clear presentation of ideas, standing up for a cause or putting everything down on paper, individuals built on the other related professional skill sets. As one moves up the ladder and advances to higher positions like that of a manager, boss or a leader, the importance of having great communication skills increases even more significantly. It is furthermore important to have good interaction skills to have better negotiations and deals wherein such skills not only help in transmitting ideas and information but also help to demonstrate trust, clarity and influence others with words and emotions.

Communication as a skill can be developed throughout the course of one's life, & it can remain a constant ongoing process. The scope of the improvement and acquisition of such skills is unlimited for everyone- be it a beginner or an expert industry leader of any domain. With the right training and mentoring, one can improve significantly & can enhance such skills exponentially. Under the right guidance, it can be easily inculcated and prove to be readily helpful.
