Intentionality: The Secret to Finding More Joy, Meaning, and Fulfillment

I recently came across a beautiful definition of intention:
"Intention is simply allowing the will and the mind to align and move in harmony."*
I love this definition because it suggests that intention involves aligning our desires with our actions, and guiding our choices with clarity and purpose.
There is a clear distinction between doing something with intention versus letting our unconscious mind run the show and go through our days on autopilot.
Our society often praises doing things on autopilot—like establishing a positive habit of exercise, meditation, or healthy eating. The idea is that once you establish the habit, you can do it without thinking about it. I used to tell clients the same thing and even practiced it myself.
However, I’ve come to realize that even healthy habits can lose their meaning if they're done without intention. When we act on autopilot, we risk becoming mechanical, losing the richness of our experiences, and missing the chance to live with purpose.
We are not robots. We are souls having a human experience, and the intention behind our actions is what brings us joy, meaning, and fulfillment. Intention is our truth, giving us agency over our lives. It allows us to be the creators of our own experiences.
To be more intentional, start by asking yourself a simple but powerful question:
"Why am I choosing to take this action?"
If the answer doesn’t serve you, bring you joy, or nourish you, it's time to change course and bring intention back into your life.
Here are some examples:
Exercise: What is my body saying about how I'm exercising? If you've been exercising the same way for 20 years and no longer feel energized or enjoy it, it might be time to switch to a gentler style or reduce the frequency.
Work: What is my body and spirit saying about how I’m working? If you’ve been running your business the same way for years with little rest and now feel overwhelmed, perhaps you need to slow down, seek support, and find a new approach.
These are just two examples, but you can apply intentionality to all areas of your life. The key is to question your routines and identify where they might need a refresh to bring back meaning and joy.
