I used to believe constant hustle was the only path to success. I’d pride myself on my productivity. Exhaustion was my only permission to stop.??
We’re addicted to being “doers.” I get it, checking off the lists and smashing glass ceilings while managing everything at home feels like our best productive selves. This “double shift” women face – full-time work and unpaid labor at home – is a reality many of us accept. But here’s the truth: we are not our best productive selves when we’re exhausted.?
So what should we DO? Here’s a novel idea: rest. It is only through rest, that we progress.
Resting is far from a passive activity. From my own experience, I have to actively – and intentionally — rest. When I do, my productivity soars. I’m more efficient, creative, and effective in my work. Chronic stress fades away, leaving me with a clear, focused mind. My relationships thrive too, because I have the energy and patience to truly connect with my loved ones – both at home and at work.?
I’ve learned that allowing myself to rest is not easy – sometimes, I feel anxious about it. But here are some suggestions on steps to allow your body, mind, and spirit to be still so that you can recharge.
- Release:? Let go of what you “should” be doing, even if it’s just for a few minutes. At this moment, release the guilt and expectations you’ve placed on yourself. Think of this moment as a sacred pause. The dishes can wait, the laundry isn't going anywhere, and that email can be answered later. Know that this pause is productive. “Those who are wise won't be busy, and those who are too busy can't be wise.”?
- Permission: Only you can give yourself permission to rest. No one else. This is about recognizing your worth and understanding that this time for yourself is essential. Schedule your rest as you would any important meeting. Put it on your calendar, set reminders, and honor it. Make it a non-negotiable part of your routine. Find a physical space that invites relaxation—a cozy corner, a comfy chair, soft lighting. Giving yourself this permission is about believing that rest is just as important as any work commitment.? Understand that this permission is the key to believing and trusting yourself.
- Compassion: This isn’t just about physical fatigue; it’s emotional and mental too. You are recovering from so much. You are sacrificing your own needs and suffering, but you are so high performing that you, and others, can’t even see it. Be compassionate to yourself by accepting this need and caring for your wellbeing.? It’s okay to admit that you’re tired, stressed, or overwhelmed. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend in need.
- Stop: I know it feels like it will all fall apart? if you stop. It won’t. Challenge this belief by looking at your life and seeing the times you took a break and things were fine—or even better—afterward.? There is no evidence in your life that stopping will lead you to fail. Stop. Engage in your permission space and use this time to be still, breathe deeply, and simply exist without any agenda.
Learning how to rest is powerful. Prioritizing your health isn’t just a treat for yourself—it’s a bold statement that our well-being matters and we can set a positive example for our children, and those around us. They say, “Health is wealth.” Practice these steps.? When you rest, you can truly awaken.
