Leading with empathy, engaging and decisive when needed with an eye for detail are some of the best I’ve seen. They don’t pretend to know everything, they show they care and ask good questions and generally get good answers

As I was thinking about this question, my mind went back to when I was an OIM (Offshore Installation Manager) in Egypt and Austin King who was the VP of Operations used to visit the rig. As we walked across the deck approaching the roustabouts, he would ask me what the name was of each person, and would then go on to ask me what was the name of their wives and the names of their children. Even though this was back in the 80’s, although I had yet to know that my E-Colors were predominantly Yellow/ Red that kind of information was second nature to me. Other people in supervisory positions who were more independent by nature and certainly more task oriented than me, really struggled with Austin’s visits.
