Intelligent solutions for the CSSD - Does it make sense to think outside the box?

Making workflows more effective was often part of my job when I was implementing projects in clinics or at manufacturers. The shortage of skilled workers - also in the healthcare sector - has brought this issue even more to the fore. Taking hospitals as an example, we are not only talking about a deficit in the medical sector; the internal service sector is also affected.

What could be more obvious than to take a closer look at the processes and possibilities of technical support in this area? For example, sterile product trays are packed in the CSSD( (reprocessing unit for medical products). Intelligent systems from other industries could be very valuable at this point - they have learned how things should ideally look in different industries.

Out of my own interest, I spoke to GEISTER Medizintechnik GmbH from Tuttlingen and ivii GmbH from Graz, manufacturer of a control system, and suggested a test. Both companies provided me with the necessary products.

Once the system has become familiar with the multitude of different instruments (manufacturers, types, applications, etc.) and stored them in a database, the database is combined with the packing lists for the sieves. Admittedly, this is a time-consuming process, but with a stunning result: after this learning phase, the system automatically recognizes whether the prepared instruments are correct in terms of the number of clamps, scissors or forceps, for example. Deviations from the target status are displayed on the monitor and can then be corrected and released.

An absolutely fantastic result for improving the effectiveness of these work processes! And another decisive advantage came to light during these tests: the issue of documenting the processes is 100% solved with this system.
