What is the difference between IA (Intelligent Automation) and AI (Artificial Intelligence)?

This article is an abstract from the book "INTELLIGENT AUTOMATION: Learn how to boost business and make our world more human", the first reference book on this topic, released a week ago.

Also called Hyperautomation, IA is a combination of methods and technologies, involving people, organizations, machine learning, low-code platforms, robotic process automation (RPA), and more. It is very recent, coined in 2017 by IEEE. While physical robots used to automate physical tasks (industrial automation), IA applies to office work, typically performed on computers.

Office work (also called knowledge work) represents 80% of the job roles in the world. Most of us are knowledge workers. For example, programmers, physicians, pharmacists, architects, engineers, scientists, designers, public accountants, lawyers are all knowledge workers, susceptible to benefit from IA.

The goal of using IA is to perform the repetitive, transactional, mundane tasks on behalf of employees, allowing them to focus on more enjoyable and value-add activities (such as creative or social ones). As a result, IA increases process speed and efficiency, resulting in boosting employee and customer experiences.

Differentiating between IA, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and other business process management (BPM) systems, including cloud and workflow platforms, can be complicated. Indeed, boundaries between these concepts are blurred, as they are all emerging, continually evolving, and often converging.

However, in this article, to bring clarity, I draw a few essential anchor points based on a survey of over 200 IA experts performed in Dec 2019. The key outcome is shown in the below figure.

The main points explaining this framework are:

  • AI: The goal of artificial intelligence is to mimic human intelligence through the use of technology. In its narrow definition, AI includes mainly the use of machine learning to create insights and learn from data. The applications of AI that are related to IA are the ones associated with the automation of office work. Hence, IA includes all uses of AI across industries, except, for example, gaming, arts, or fundamental research, which are excluded.
  • Robotics: IA includes software-based robotics. Physical robots used in manufacturing are not considered part of IA.
  • Cloud, workflow, and business process management (BPM): Only platforms that demonstrate some form of intelligence are included in the scope of IA. Excluded are systems with limited ability to support end-to-end processes, and which provide little insights on the work activities performed.

This insight is an abstract from the book "INTELLIGENT AUTOMATION: Learn how to boost business and make our world more human" released a week ago.

In this book, you will also learn:

  • Why has the use of IA been expanding so rapidly? What are the benefits it unleashes for employees, companies, customers, and society?
  • How have leading organizations been able to harness the full potential of IA, at scale, and generate massive efficiency gains in the range of 20 to 60%?
  • How can IA save 10+ million lives per year, triple our global budget for education, eliminate hunger, help protect our planet, or increase the resilience of society to pandemics and crises?

From this book, you will also get to:

  • Enjoy the lessons learned from 100+ IA transformation successes (and failures)
  • Benefit from the largest publicly available library of 500+ IA use cases by industry and by business function
  • Gain access to insights garnered from 200+ IA industry experts

I find this extremely relevant and impactful. Seems to me, that IA is *just right* way to frame the opportunity for productivity jump in organisations - making them significantly more competitive. And yes, productivity builds on value/experience AND efficiency (that is, the effort needed to create the value/experience). Knowledge work is absolutely the right starting point. Then proceeding to pinpoint the intersection of new and existing capabililities. Great stuff!

Hi Pascal BORNET, this is a very hot topic at the moment, thanks. When I discuss it with my 'digital purist' friends we always have many different viewpoints. They usually assert AI is a bigger domain than RPA (feature wise, not market coverage or capability) even if RPA's native AI integration is walking giant steps forward. Interestingly enough, when my 'digital integralist' friends (rarely) join the discussion, they usually label BPM as the 'new legacy'! They see RPA in few years will push BPM to be decomissioned (except from the Banking sector that hugely invested in to it). Not sure on this, but there could be few valid points: the transition from a functional top-down approach (BPM) to a more operational one and the huge need for BPM to use APIs to integrate with external platforms and all the costs that come with it. In any case our digital world is in continuous transformation and will be interesting to see its further evolution!

This is very interesting Pascal. It will be also interesting to share/show what is NOT "IA". There is a lot going on in this space and there are a lot of entrants in the customer space but they are still trying to figure our what is and what isn't IA. Love to read your posts. #IA #AI
