1?? [Data Center] Microsoft and OpenAI are collaborating on a massive data center project, potentially costing over $115 billion, to house an AI supercomputer called "Stargate."

• The supercomputer, consisting of millions of AI chips, is expected to launch as early as 2028 and could require several gigawatts of power, potentially necessitating alternative energy sources like nuclear power.
• Stargate is the fifth and largest phase in a series of planned supercomputers by the companies over a six-year period, with a smaller fourth-phase supercomputer for OpenAI expected to come online around 2026.

2?? [AI] Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, has introduced Grok-1.5, a new generative AI model with enhanced mathematics and reasoning capabilities, which will be available to early testers on Musk's social media platform X next week.

• While Grok-1.5 outperforms its predecessor and some competitors on certain problem-solving benchmarks, it still falls short in high school and grade school math tests compared to models like Claude, Gemini, and GPT-4.
• Grok-1.5 can process contexts of up to 128,000 tokens, and Musk has announced that Grok 2, currently in training, is expected to surpass existing AI on all metrics.

3?? [Automation] Yum Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC, is investing heavily in AI and automation to reduce costs and increase sales, with initiatives such as generative AI in its mobile app for restaurant managers and voice AI for drive-thru order-taking.

• The company is also testing AI for supply order recommendations, menu optimization, personalized customer offers, and image-recognition technology to count vehicles in drive-thrus.
• California's new $20 per hour minimum wage law for fast-food workers has prompted some operators to adopt AI solutions, including a fully autonomous AI-powered restaurant called "CaliExpress by Flippy" in Pasadena, featuring a "BurgerBot" and a short-order cooking robot named Flippy.

4?? [Siri] Apple researchers have developed an AI system called ReALM (Reference Resolution As Language Modeling) to enable more natural interactions with Siri by converting context into text for easier processing by large language models.

• ReALM can understand ambiguous references to on-screen entities and contextual cues, allowing for more natural interactions with voice assistants, and its smaller models show comparable performance to GPT-4 with fewer parameters, making them suitable for on-device applications.
• The researchers noted that handling complex visual references would likely require the integration of computer vision and multi-modal AI techniques.

5?? [Policing] AI integration in Real-Time Crime Centers (RTCCs) enables the processing and analysis of vast amounts of data from multiple sources in real-time, aiding in threat assessment and strategic planning.

• Various AI techniques, such as image and video analysis, predictive analytics, natural language processing, anomaly detection, data fusion, and real-time processing, are employed to identify patterns, predict crimes, and provide a comprehensive picture of situations.
• As AI technologies continue to advance, they are expected to have a significant impact on the future of policing and RTCCs, with emerging platforms like responsible AI dashboards, multimodal collaboration, real-time officer wellness monitoring, and global RTCC networks.
