1?? [GENERATIVE AI] Apple is investing around $1B annually to catch up on its generative AI capabilities, spearheaded by executives John Giannandrea, Craig Federighi, and Eddy Cue.

-??????? Their teams are focusing on enhancing Siri's intelligence, integrating AI in iOS for better user interaction, and incorporating AI across various apps for improved functionality.

-??????? Despite these advancements, Apple's leadership was reportedly caught off guard by the rapid progress in AI technology, causing a rush to keep up, and while they have developed notable AI frameworks like Ajax and Apple GPT, they haven’t yet been utilized in consumer-facing products.

2?? [Privacy] Interesting survey on how Americans perceive current data privacy risks, personal data management and digital privacy laws.

-??????? Concern is high:?81% say they feel very or somewhat concerned with how companies use the data they collect about them. Fully 71% say the same regarding the government’s use of data.

-??????? Roughly four-in-ten Americans say they are very worried about companies selling their information to others without them knowing (42%) or people stealing their identity or personal information (38%). Fewer are apprehensive about law enforcement monitoring what they do online (15%).

-??????? When managing their privacy online, most Americans say they trust themselves to make the right decisions about their personal information (78%), and a majority are skeptical that anything they do will make a difference (61%).

3?? [Processor] IBM has developed a new AI chip called "NorthPole" that significantly accelerates image recognition, performing 22 times faster than existing chips while consuming less power.

-??????? Built over eight years, the chip houses 256 computing units each with its own memory, overcoming the "von Neumann bottleneck" to enhance efficiency in tasks like image recognition.

-??????? Despite its limitations in RAM and being restricted to pre-programmed neural networks, the chip's speed could be beneficial in critical applications like self-driving cars.

4?? [Transparency] Stanford researchers evaluated the transparency of major AI models and found that Meta's Llama 2 scored the highest with 54 out of 100, indicating a general lack of transparency in the AI industry.

-??????? They assessed 10 popular generative AI models on various factors including data sources and information sharing, with the average score being 37%.

The study aims to prompt companies to be more transparent about their AI technologies, which could also assist governments in crafting regulations for AI models.

5?? [Robotics] Amazon is exploring AI and robotics technologies to enhance automation within its warehouses, introducing two new robots, Sequoia and Digit, aimed at ensuring worker safety and expediting deliveries.

-??????? Digit, a bipedal robot capable of various physical tasks, will initially assist in tote recycling, while Sequoia, a robotic inventory processing system, is designed to speed up product retrieval by 75% and order fulfillment by 25% by sorting inventory for employees.

-??????? With a robotic workforce of over 750,000, these innovations signify Amazon's continued effort to harmonize robot and human operations to manage repetitive tasks more efficiently.
