Declare independence from IT trends!

One of the worst mistakes organizations make is chasing the “hot” IT trend as THE solution to their business challenges (ignoring the fact that management is often a bigger drag on productivity than software, but that’s a note for a different day).

Over the past few months, the heat around genAI has cooled as it’s no longer the bright and shiny new IT kid on the block. The irony is that now that we’re getting into identifying where genAI can be successful, the infrastructure requirements, training, etc. the technology is more capable now than two years ago of delivering results. However, it’s hard, so pundits and lazy managers are beginning to look around for the next IT savior/silver bullet.

You know as well as I do that a silver bullet for IT is as fictional as Big Foot.

Likewise, process mining has cooled off – it's no longer touted as THE answer but, rightly, a key piece of process automation initiatives. Process mining continues to help companies untangle business workflows. When a technology begins to be “boring,” it’s absolutely time to pay attention to it – especially tools like genAI and process mining that can increase process efficiency and your bottom line.

Is it boring to save money and increase efficiency? I’d say that’s never boring and both genAI and process mining will help companies do both for years into the future.

I hope all of you reading this have a safe, fun, enjoyable long July 4 weekend. For those of you in the hotter parts of the country, stay hydrated! And, everyone, please remember that you want to be able to easily scroll and type with your various screens – be careful with the fireworks!

Happy Fourth and thanks for reading.

How AI and Process Orchestration Bring Us a Giant Leap Closer to the Autonomous Enterprise

While we are likely quite a ways from an “autonomous enterprise,” AI brings us a step closer. The post argues that “Now, with the advent of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), AI is capable of extracting unstructured information, converting it into a structured form, and using it for decision-making. It can make decisions based on the sum of information, rather than individual pieces of data, effectively drawing on its own experience.” Read on for details.

What Is Process Mining (and Why Isn’t It Enough)?

This is a perfect intro or refresher to process mining. This post from our partner ABBYY includes an introduction to process mining, explains how it works and provides examples of use cases, and usefully discusses the technology’s limitations. [Note: I’ve shared this post before, but we have a bunch of new subscribers and ABBYY has updated this post since I shared it last.] Read about and understand process mining .

The New Celonis Studio Experience

Recently, Celonis released an update on its Studio that focused on user experience and development. Holistically, it combined the (Legacy) Views and Analyses into one look and feel that uses the best parts of both. Further, it updated the Studio package management system. See what else Doculabs’ resident Celonis expert, James Newman, had to say .

Data Processing vs. Process Management vs. AI?

Managing data isn’t the goal, but a data processing mindset can lull organizations into forgetting that there’s a business goal to be reached and data is needed to achieve that goal. This is a useful overview of why companies need to think about how they’re going to use their data as well as ideas on how to effectively use the BPMN model to improve business processes. How to Handle GenAI Data Governance

Natural language models, such as ChatGPT or Copilot for Microsoft 365, have grown to prominence partly because they are so easy to use. Unfortunately, this “ease of use” also makes it easy for users to accidentally expose sensitive data. For instance, a salesperson might upload quarterly projections for help with a report, or someone in HR might do the same for employee salaries. If these files are not properly managed, they could become accessible to unauthorized users across the organization—and possibly beyond. Read more .

GenAI: Creating Value Through Governance

Most business leaders recognize thorough governance will be essential to scale up their GenAI proofs of concept (POCs) and generate sustainable value, while avoiding soaring technology costs, copyright liabilities, unmet expectations, and low-quality outputs. They are?augmenting risk management, compliance, security, and privacy functions ?to support governance, including vetting third-party GenAI tools and assessing specific risks associated with planned GenAI use cases. How to Future-Proof Your Workforce in a Changing World of Work

Workplace challenges are only getting more complicated – multiple generations in the workplace as everyone works longer and arguments over where people should work are just two major workforce challenges. And then there’s AI:

“Technological advancements, especially artificial intelligence (AI), also play a crucial role in shaping the future of work. The AI transformation promises to be as radical as the Industrial Revolution, necessitating new strategies for upskilling and job redesign. For business leaders, this means helping employees transition into new opportunities as AI takes over tasks that are highly susceptible to automation. Implementing strategies like reverse mentoring can also bring substantial benefits, especially with an age-diverse workforce facing technological advancements.”
