Intelligence and data are everywhere, so why can't I get accurate data analysis when I need it?

Don Capener-Dean, Lewis College of Business at Marshall University

?My positive take on AI is that AI intelligence is efficiently distributed where and when it is most needed and most relevant.

But why am I having such a difficult time getting accurate and timely data? Where can I validate the sources? Why does it seem so arduous or difficult to locate and confirm the validity of any analysis when I receive it from search or AI inquiries?

For example, I recently searched for a new home in Huntington West Virginia. Using Zillow and Realtor.com my wife and I searched daily for new listings, data on recent sales, and price changes. Yet the kind of information we really needed to make our best offer was always difficult to find and we were left without any analysis. We trusted the analysis to our realtor. But realtors are paid on commission. The negotiation strategy of what terms and price offer was left up to us just when we needed more data. The real estate compensation of agents made this process problematic. It was stacked against us since lower price offers meant lower commissions.

Last April, we were in the market for a replacement vehicle for our 2017 Toyota Highlander. It was so difficult to get data on what other buyers paid in our area for the 2023 Ford Expedition model we were interested in. It was next to impossible to find out what buyers were paying for our used Toyota Highlander with 76,000 miles and no accidents. Whether its a new home, car, or best movie to see, AI is not delivering yet for me. What about you? I was recently interested in the best smoothie location, but the search results and AI search was extremely frustrating to review-nothing conclusive like 67% of the people in your zip code prefer Roxberry against Smoothie King. In the future, I want access to that kind of information. My hope is I could find it efficiently. My dream is that it would be relevant to my tastes, location, and even socio-economic status. Is that dream unreasonable?

I’m having similar issues, but my issue is that the prompts I’m writing are too complex for the AI. It doesn’t feel ready for prime time yet to replace complex tasks and the benefit humans have of experience. On the other hand my usage of AI is increasing so I think that means it must be working - somewhat.

If one could have the type of reliable data you have access to as dean for everything you buy, the world would be a truly awesome place :)
